Purpose of the catalogue
The EDAOY Public Domain Literature Library exists to make older English-language fiction freely available to readers, researchers, and enthusiasts. The catalogue does not aim to be comprehensive or scholarly but to provide a curated selection of works that remain readable and engaging. Each entry includes a bibliographic record and an editorial note meant to orient the reader rather than to exhaust the text.
Scope and selection
The library currently holds 96 works of fiction, all published before 1928 and drawn from Project Gutenberg. Selection prioritises novels that blend genre conventions—mystery, crime, romance—with psychological or social observation. Works are chosen for their narrative interest, historical significance, or representative quality. No work is included for political, commercial, or promotional reasons.
Source attribution
Every text is sourced from Project Gutenberg, a digital library of public-domain works. The catalogue reproduces the text as provided by Project Gutenberg, including any transcription errors, variant spellings, or outdated typography. Illustrations are noted but not reproduced; readers are directed to the original source for visual content.
Bibliographic records
Each record contains the work's title, author(s), illustrator(s) if any, original publisher, and a set of subject keywords derived from the Library of Congress. The publication date is the original date of the work, not the date of the digital edition. Keywords are drawn from the Project Gutenberg metadata and may reflect historical cataloguing practices.
Category assignment
Works are assigned to one of four thematic categories: Crime Investigation and Mystery Collections. These categories are editorial constructs designed to aid browsing; they are not exhaustive or mutually exclusive. Assignment is based on the catalogue project's reading of the work's dominant themes, not on genre labels. A novel that combines psychological depth with a strong romance may be placed in either category at the catalogue project's discretion.
Editorial reading context
The catalogue notes accompanying each book are prepared as supplementary catalogue material after a reading of the work. They focus on narrative voice, structure, setting, and thematic concerns, and are intended to provide a starting point for the reader. Edition facts and text measurements
All works are presented in their entirety as sourced from Project Gutenberg. No abridgements or alterations have been made. The catalogue does not include word counts, page numbers, or other metrics, as these vary between digital formats.

Each category page lists three recommended works with brief reasons. These recommendations reflect the catalogue assessment of each work's strengths and are not intended as a 'best of' list. Readers are encouraged to explore beyond the recommendations. No affiliate links or sponsored suggestions are used.
